RPL allows a person to receive recognition and credit for the knowledge and skills they have, no matter how and where they were attained, including overseas. This can include skills from:
- Previous study (including courses at school or TAFE, through adult education classes or training programs at work
- Work experience (including work that is paid or unpaid)
- Life experience such as leisure pursuits or voluntary work.
What matters in obtaining RPL is that knowledge and skills you already have help you to meet the learning outcomes and assessment criteria of the qualification for which you are seeking credit. RPL assessment can result in a full qualification or a Statement of Attainment for partial completion.

Australian Government incentive payments encourage employers to offer employment-based training opportunities to enable people to gain and build on their skills. The Australian Government also offers personal benefits to Australian Apprentices to attract more Australians into technical and trade education.The National Skills Needs List identifies those trades experiencing persistent skills shortages, many of which are trades found in the Building and Construction Industry. Examples include Bricklayer, Plasterer, Carpenter, Painter and Decorator.Training in these trades attracts a range of financial incentives to eligible Employers and to their Apprentices.Other tangible benefits for Employers include:

- Raising the skills base of your business and the quality of work performed
- Having access to specialist assistance to help you to determine the most effective and efficient model for skills training in your business
